Scottbbs users guide

In this document, the features and commands of the scottbbs
bulletin board software will be discussed. It is divided into
five sections: Special feature, main menu, files menu, message
menu, and utilities.
Special features
----------------
1. Hot menus - Enter a command while the menu is still being
displayed.
2. Extensive conferences - see conference command below.

Main menu
---------
<B> Bulletins - The bulletins section has text files that can be listed
to your screen. When you first call the bbs or type "B" at the main
menu, a listing of the available bulletins will be displayed. Then,
the system will prompt you for the bulletin number that you wish to
view. Type "L" to list the bulletins, of press your <Enter> key to
continue. If you are in a conference, the bulletins for that con-
ference will be displayed.
<C> Conferences - The conference subsystem allows you to join special
areas set aside for special topics - Forsale, Games, Etc. When
you access the conference system, a list of the available con-
ferences will be displayed. Then the system will prompt you for
the conference you wish to join or "99" for the main conference.
Type the number of the conference that you want to access here.
After visiting the conference section, most features of the
bulletin board will be changed for that conference. The files
section will automatically display the files for your conference,
the message system will use the message base for that conference,
the bulletin section will display bulletins for tahe conference,
the user list will display users of your conference, etc.
<D> Doors - The door system allows you to access subprograms outside
the bbs such as adventure games, voting booth, trivia, etc.
<F> files system - See Files menu
<G> Goodbye - This command logs you off of the system. Please log-
off with this command rather than just hanging up.
<H> Help - The help file will be displayed, with the descriptions
of the commands.
<I> Initial welcome - The initial welcome message will be displayed.
This is the message that is displayed after you enter your name
and password.
<L> Leave a comment - Thios command will enter a private message to
the sysop. Only the sysop will be allowed to read it. It is the
same as the <E>nter message command at the message system, but
the subject, who you are sending it to, and privacy are entered
for you. Replies to your message may be in the message system.
<M> Message system - See Message system
<N> New user message - This will display the message that is given
to new users when they first log-on to the system. This message
commonly contains rules, etc.
<U> Utilities - See utilites
<X> Expert - This command will enable or disable the menus. If you
have become familiar with the system, you wont have to wait
through those long menus. If not, leave the expert toggle at
its default value.
<Y> Yell - This allows you to talk dirrectly to the sysop by typing.
The sysop will be "Paged". This means that the computer starts
beeping and if the sysop responds, you will be chating. If not,
please try again later or leave a comment.
Files system
------------
<A> Arc file view - The system will allow you to examine the contents
of the popular arc files. Arc files are actually groups of files
combined into large files to speed up transfer.
<D> Download - This command will transfer a file from this bbs to your
computer. There are currently to protocals supported. Ascii can
only transmit text files and Xmodem can transmit text files and
binary files.
<H> Help - This command will display a quick summary of the file
system commands.
<L> List -This command is used to list what files you may download. If
you are in the main conference, then a menu displaying the available
direcectories will be displayed. Type the number of the directory
that you wish to view and it will be displayed. If you are in a
conference then the files for that conference will be displayed.
<N> New - This command is a lot like the <L> command except that it
prompts you for a date. All files in the system after that date
will be listed.
<Q> Quit to main menu - This command will return you to the main menu.
<S> Search - This command will let you search the file directories
for a specific string. Enter the string that you wish to search
for and the directory to search and all entries conatining that
string will be displayed.
<U> Upload - This command will allow you to transmit a file from your
computer to this bbs. After transfer, you will be prompted for the
description of the file. If you are in a conference then your file
will be placed in that conference. If you are not in a conference,
your file will be placed in the upload dir - 99.
Message system
--------------
<E> Enter a message - This command allows you to enter a message to
either a specific person or all users. You will be prompted for
the name of the user that you wish to receive the message. If
you wish to direct it to a specific person, then type their name
if not, type "All" for all users. Next, enter the subject for the
message and wether or not the message is to be private or not.
Private messages can only be read by the person who it is sent
to. Then, type the lines to your message. When you are finished,
enter a blank line. Next, you can (S)ave your message, (Q)uit
and not save your message, (C)ontinue entering it where you left
off, (L)ist your message, or (E)dit/retype a line.
<H> Help - This will display the help file for the message system.
<P> Personal message read - This command is like the <R> command,
but it will only read messages that are sent to you. It will
read messages in any conference.
<Q> Quit to main menu - This command brings you back to the main menu.
<R> Read - This will allow you to read messages. You may read
any un-private messages, or private messages to you. Type
"N" to see the next message, "P" to see the last message,
"C" to change to a specific message number, or "R" to
reply. When you reply to a message, it is exactly like the
<E> enter message command, but the subject is an "(R)" with the
subject of the message that you are replying to, and the
message will be sent to the user who wrote the message you are
replying to.
<S> Scan - this command will prompt you for the starting and ending
message numbers to scan, and it will list all messages that
are in that range. It only list the "To", "From", and "subject"
of the message. You will have to read it yourself.
Utilities
---------
<C> Change passowrd - This will let you change your password. But
beware, if you forget your password, you cannot log back on
to the system.
<G> Graphics - There are four levels of menus that you can view.
The menus don't have any different options, They're just a
way to show off the system.
<L> List users - If you are in the main conference, then all of the
users on the bulletin board will be listed. If you are in a
conference, the users of that conference will be listed.
<Q> Quit to main menu - This will bring you back to the main menu.
<R> Recent callers - This command will display the people who have
called the bulletin board. The callers will be listed from
the last call (most recent) to the first call.
<U> User profile - This will display certain information about
you. Your name, city, state, etc. Some of it you can change
and some you cannot.
<X> Expert - This command will enable or disable the menus. If you
have become familiar with the system, you wont have to wait
through those long menus. If not, leave the expert toggle at
its default value.
